St. Matthew's School believes in the dignity and value of each child. We believe that each child is a gift from God and a promise for tomorrow. These core beliefs have helped us shape a school environment that is second to none in its commitment to academic excellence, spiritual formation, appreciation for diversity, and one that instills a sense of responsibility for each child's place in this world.
St. Matthew's is a small, Catholic school located on St. Paul's West Side, that educates students from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Our student body is both ethnically and economically diverse. Many of our students live on the West Side while others come from neighboring communities including West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights. While our student body is diverse, what our students and their families have in common is a strong commitment to a rigorous education, Catholic values and service to community.
St. Matthew's commitment to academic excellence is matched by our commitment to instilling the spiritual values and social teachings of the Catholic Church. It is this combination that produces great leaders and great citizens. St. Matthew's goal is to help our students discover all the gifts God has given them and help them understand it is their responsibility to use them not only for their own good, but for the benefit of others as well.
When we say, "small", we mean we are committed to maintaining an enrollment that does not exceed 200 students. Our average class size of 16 students guarantees each child plenty of individual attention. Keeping our school small means that each child has the opportunity to lead, to serve, to explore and develop their talents. As a result, when St. Matthew's students move on to much larger high schools, they stand out academically and are frequently awarded academic honors. Staying small also allows teachers, students and families to develop a bond and sense of community that can't be duplicated in a big school environment.
St. Matthew's commitment to children is such that no family is turned away due to an inability to pay. We will establish a partnership with each family that will allow their child to attend our school. We likewise welcome students of different faiths who subscribe to the values and discipline embodied in Catholic teaching.
